Getting a job

Work place Many people with learning disabilities want to get a job, earn money and be independent.
Thinking You should start thinking about:

  • What type of job you would like?
  • Do you have any experience or skills?
  • Would you like to work full time or part time?
  • Where would you like to work? In an office, shop, outdoors
Work experience You can work for a short amount of time to get experience of a job but you usually don’t get paid. This is called work experience.
Volunterring If you don’t want a paid job but want to keep busy, there is lots of voluntary work that you can do for an organisation like a charity.

Easy read - getting a job You may want some help finding a job. Here are some organisations that can help:

  • Job Centre Plus has Disability Employment Advisers who can help you get a job. The Job Centre Plus in Redbridge is at Sevenkings and you can telephone on 0845 604 3719.
  • Redbridge Connexions Service works with young people who are not in education, employment or training. They are based in Ilford and you can telephone 020 8514 9567. For more information have a look at Redbridge Council's website.
