Motability scheme

The Motability scheme enables disabled people to have greater independence by offering the use of a brand new car, powered wheelchair or scooter for personal use. All vehicles are leased for an agreed period of time and is funded by the Disability Living Allowance which is allocated by the government.

Motability oversees thescheme and is a national charity which helps disabled people to be more mobile when they would otherwise be unable to, or could notafford to purchase a suitable vehicle to help with their needs.

Who can apply

You can apply for a vehicle for yourself or for someoneyou knowsuch as a child or relative who is unable to drive. Additional drivers can also be added to the lease, however terms and conditions apply.

To be able to lease a vehicle through this scheme, you must:

  • Have at least 12 months left of Disability Living Allowance remaining
  • Have the Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living Allowance or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement
  • Be applying for yourself (an adult) or someone who is aged three years old or over
